The Department of Electronic Systems at The Technical Faculty of IT and Design invites applications for one or more postdoc positions in the field of advanced antenna architectures for small satellites with mechanical beam steering techniques as per March 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The positions are available for a period of 3 years.
In electronic engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and societal impact. The Department of Electronic Systems employs more than 200 people, of which about 90 are PhD students, and about 40 % of all employees are internationals. In total, it has more than 600 students in its BSc and MSc programs, which are based on AAU's problem-based learning model. The department leverages its unique research infrastructure and lab facilities to conduct world-leading fundamental and applied research within communication, networks, control systems, AI, sound, cyber security, and robotics. The department plays an active role in transferring inventions and results into applications in close collaboration with industrial partners worldwide. You can read more about the department at www.es.aau.dk.
Your work tasks
The successful candidates will join the Antennas, Propagation and Millimetre-Wave Systems section, contributing to research on compact, multiband, and high-gain antenna solutions for space-constrained satellite platforms. The work includes the investigation of antennas with shared-aperture multiband configurations, mechanical steering mechanisms, and antenna–mechanical co-design approaches enabling wide-angle scanning with high efficiency. We expect the candidates to assist supervising junior PhD students in the research group and help prepare research proposal applications.
Your competencies
We expect the candidates will have some or all of the following competencies:
- PhD in Wireless Communication, Electrical Engineering, Antenna/EM Engineering, Microwave Engineering, or a related field.
- Solid knowledge of electromagnetic theory, microwave principles, and computational electromagnetics (FDTD, FEM, MoM).
- Research experience with mechanically beam-steering, multiband/shared-aperture antennas, or antenna array synthesis.
- Proficiency with CST Studio Suite, HFSS, and related full-wave EM simulation workflows.
- Competence in MATLAB or Python for numerical modelling, data analysis, and optimisation.
Ability to conduct experimental antenna measurements, including near-field and far-field characterization. - Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
- Ability to conduct independent research and contribute effectively within an interdisciplinary academic team
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with radiating component development from initial concept to prototype validation.
• Familiarity with satellite communication system requirements, including link budgets, beam steering, and orbital pointing dynamics.
• Experience with optimization methods and physics-informed machine learning.
• A strong publication record in antennas, computational electromagnetics, electromagnetic field exposure, liquid crystal-based components, or AI-based EM modelling.
Who we are
The Antenna Research Group at the Department of Electronic Systems was founded in 2017. The group aims at all challenging applications where antennas or electromagnetics can be applied to gain advantages. More specified, the research areas include: antennas for handsets and base stations, small satellite antennas, drone antennas, phased array antennas, massive MIMO antennas, metasurfaces, bio-electromagnetics, and wireless sensors.
Qualification requirements
Appointment as postdoc requires academic qualifications at PhD level.
