The Villum Foundation has launched a record-breaking research grant of 1 billion DKK over the next ten years, with the goal to advance efforts towards a more sustainable built environment. The announced position is part of this venture, and the successful candidate will participate in the joint effort to achieve this goal. The position is a four-year full-time postdoc position offered for the most talented and promising candidates. It is available from March 1, 2026 at the Research Group on Ocean and Coastal Engineering, Department of The Built Environment at the Faculty of Engineering and Science at Aalborg University.
Your work tasks
Climate changes impact significantly the risk of coastal hazards in coastal areas. Correct assessment of the risk and proper climate adaptation planning requires better understanding of the physical processes of the wave structure interaction. The postdoc position aims at developing a state-of-the-art methodology for accurate testing of such structures in our physical wave basin. This involves accurate reproduction of the nonlinear waves by the wavemaker by utilization of cyber-physical modelling. Analysis of the generated short-crested nonlinear waves is needed to identify the incident waves at the structure. This may be obtained by further development of the NL-SORS method. This could for example include extension of the method to sloping foreshores. The detailed generation and analysis of the waves will be utilized to study the fundamental processes of wave interaction with coastal protection structures. Studied structures could for example include traditional rubble mound structures, dikes and seawalls.
Your competencies
The successful candidate has a strong background within Ocean or Coastal Engineering, and has shown independence, motivation, and the ability to initiate novel work on her/his own initiative. The candidate shall have the ability to grow into a world-wide recognized researcher within the field. She/he has furthermore shown herself/himself to be a team-worker with focus on reaching a shared objective, and to achieve a good work-life balance by managing the demands of an ambitious career alongside personal well-being, hobbies, and family time.
In terms of scientific competence, the successful candidate has experience with physical modelling of wave-structure interaction in a wave flume and/or basin. Experience with development of generation and analysis methods for waves in physical models will be positively evaluated. Experience with hard coastal protection structures will also be positively evaluated.
Who we are
The research group on Ocean and Coastal Engineering addresses marine engineering problems and especially with analysis and design of hard and soft structures exposed to wave actions. We have a strong background in coastal and port engineering and furthermore work on development of wave energy and offshore wind. Most of our research is focused around work in our wave flume and basin.
