Postdoc opportunity in glass fracture mechanics at Aalborg University

dato

Do you want to work with glass materials and the structural origins of their fracture behavior? And do you see yourself as a team player who is strong in collaboration? If yes, we look forward to reading your application to our position as Postdoc.

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, a position as Postdoc in glass fracture mechanics is open for appointment from December 1st 2025 or soon hereafter. The position is available for a period of 1 year and 9 months.

Your work tasks
This position is part of the European Research Council (ERC) funded project entitled “NewGLASS - New Horizons in Glass Structure Prediction and Mechanics. The project aims to accelerate the design of new glasses by using various computational methods and processing techniques to tailor their atomic and microscopic structure and thus control the mechanical properties. The prospective Postdoc will therefore collaborate with other Postdocs and Ph.D. students working on this project.
The research will focus on understanding the role of chemical composition and processing conditions on the resistance to crack formation and growth in different families of glasses. This experimental work will be guided by molecular dynamics simulations to understand the structural origin of the observed variations in mechanical properties. Experimental testing methods will also need to be developed, including high strain rate testing and in situ characterization of deformation using electron microscopy and x-ray scattering.
As a Postdoc, you will join the Glass Structure and Mechanics Group, led by Professor Morten Mattrup Smedskjær, within the Section of Disordered Materials. The group offers a vibrant research environment, featuring cutting-edge computational and experimental facilities and strong interdisciplinary collaboration.

Your Competencies
•    A PhD degree in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, nanoscience, or a  closely related field is required.
•    Documented track-record of research related to glass materials and their structural and/or mechanical characterization. Additional experience with molecular dynamics simulations is considered advantageous.
•    Proficiency in scientific programming (e.g. in python).
•    Excellent oral and written English language skills.
•    Strong collaborative skills, team spirit, yet the ability to work independently.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as postdoc requires academic qualifications at PhD level.
