Postdoc opportunity in edge AI for RF sensing and anomaly detection at Aalborg University

dato

The Department of Electronic Systems at The Technical Faculty of IT and Design invites applications for a postdoc in the field of Edge AI Implementation for RF Sensing and Anomaly Detection as per 1st Aug. 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for a period of 12 months, with the possibility of extension.

In electronic engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and societal impact. The Department of Electronic Systems employs more than 200 people, of which about 90 are PhD students, and about 40 % of all employees are internationals. In total, it has more than 600 students in its BSc and MSc programs, which are based on AAU's problem-based learning model. The department leverages its unique research infrastructure and lab facilities to conduct world-leading fundamental and applied research within communication, networks, control systems, AI, sound, cyber security, and robotics. The department plays an active role in transferring inventions and results into applications in close collaboration with industrial partners worldwide. You can read more about the department at www.es.aau.dk.

Your work tasks
You will conduct research at the intersection of software-defined radio, edge AI, and real-time spectrum sensing, with a core focus on implementing and deploying AI-driven RF sensing and anomaly detection systems on resource-constrained edge hardware. Your primary responsibilities include integrating and deploying SDR platforms — such as USRPs, FPGAs, and Raspberry Pi 5 — and implementing, optimizing, and benchmarking AI and machine learning models directly on these edge devices for real-time anomaly detection and identification.

You will develop robust signal acquisition and processing pipelines, translate research-grade algorithms into efficient edge inference systems, and validate end-to-end performance under real-world deployment conditions. Throughout, you will work with live measurement data spanning the full arc from hardware bring-up and edge model optimization to system-level experimental validation.

The role involves close collaboration with industrial and academic partners; access to advanced RF laboratory and computing infrastructure; and active contributions to publications; grant applications; and broader project activities.

Your competencies
You have a strong research background in software-defined radio, edge AI, embedded systems, electronic engineering, or a closely related field. You bring hands-on experience with SDR platforms such as USRPs or similar hardware, and are confident working across the full hardware-software stack — from signal acquisition and real-time processing to edge AI model deployment and system integration. Experience with implementing and optimizing machine learning models on resource-constrained platforms such as FPGAs, Raspberry Pi, or similar embedded hardware is essential. Familiarity with model compression, quantization, or hardware-aware AI optimization techniques is a strong advantage.

You communicate results clearly, enjoy working in a collaborative research setting, and are ready to contribute actively to publications and project activities.

Candidates based in the EU who are available to start at short notice will be given priority.

Who we are
You will join the Department of Electronic Systems at Aalborg University, a leading European environment for research in wireless communication, microwave engineering, and applied AI. Our research combines strong theoretical expertise with unique experimental facilities, including advanced RF laboratories and high-performance computing resources.

The position is part of the AI RF Sensors research group, which develops AI-driven methods for RF, microwave, and wireless technologies in close collaboration with Danish and international industrial partners.
