PhD position on Understanding and Designing AI Decision Support for Architectural Design Practice
Be part of the future of creativity support for professionals at Aalborg University!
This interdisciplinary project investigates how generative AI can be incorporated into the building design and operation process. Particularly, we seek to support architects to design more sustainable buildings through simulation-assisted performance feedback regarding initial design concepts. We will explore how AI systems can augment professionals’ creativity toward concurrent optimization of human health and energy efficiency. This PhD position will combine fieldwork in real-world architectural settings with human-centric, environmentally responsible application of AI tools.
You will join an active, interdisciplinary research team with strong ties to architectural practice.
The position is open for appointment as of August 1st, 2026, or soon hereafter. The position is a three-year role, located in the Department of Computer Science at Aalborg University's Technical Faculty for IT and Design. In addition to the Department of Computer Science, the project involves close collaboration with the Department of Architecture, Design, and Media Technology and is part of a larger project involving at least one other PhD candidate and a postdoctoral researcher. The candidate’s workplace will be in Aalborg.
Your work tasks
The PhD candidate will study the needs of creative professionals, in particular architects, in integrating decision support during design ideation. Your work will combine requirements gathering with interactive system development and empirical evaluation in real world settings. You will have the opportunity to shape the project based on your interests and in collaboration with a leading architectural firm.
The candidate is expected to publish in leading Human-Computer Interaction venues.
Your competencies
You hold a master’s degree in human-computer interaction, computer science, interaction design, applied artificial intelligence, architectural design, or a related field. We welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds, demonstrating strong collaboration skills and the ability to acquire new skills and technologies. Outstanding spoken and written communication skills in English are essential. Prior expertise in architecture is not required. Experience with HCI research, digital prototyping, and/or AI tools is an advantage.
Qualification requirements
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1124 of September 19, 2025 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
Who we are
The selected candidate will be part of the Human-Augmentation and Collaboration research group within the Human-Centered Computing Section at Aalborg University’s Department of Computer Science. We provide an ambitious and supportive research environment focused on the design and evaluation of interactive systems that extend human cognitive, affective, and collaborative capabilities in digital environments. Our research examines how emerging digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence, social computing, and mobile devices, impact both individual experiences and practices as well as collaboration within and across groups.
