Do you want to lead the development of bioinformatics infrastructure for a state-of-the-art research laboratory dedicated to exploring the amazingly abundant and diverse life of environmental microorganisms at the ultimate resolution in biology – individual cells?
At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience we are seeking a skilled and motivated Bioinformatics Engineer to help build and operate a next-generation facility for microbial single-cell genomics. The appointment starts on 1 September 2026, or soon thereafter.
Your work tasks
You will develop and maintain scalable bioinformatics workflows for de novo assembly, annotation, and quality control of microbial single amplified genomes (SAGs), working in close collaboration with the laboratory's head, Prof. Ramunas Stepanauskas. Beyond workflow management, you will design innovative computational tools that integrate SAG and meta-omics datasets and enable genome-to-phenome linkages at the resolution of individual cells and across natural microbial populations. Additional responsibilities include overseeing the development of the laboratory information management system (LIMS) and managing bioinformatics personnel.
Your Competencies
The ideal candidate brings strong organizational skills and documented expertise in cutting-edge bioinformatics and AI tools for the assembly, annotation, and comparative analysis of environmental microbial genomes. Excellent English communication skills — both oral and written — are essential, as is a genuine enthusiasm for collaborative, interdisciplinary research.
Who we are
The position is based at the Center for Microbial Communities, which houses approximately 50 scientists at various career stages who work to understand the structure and function of microbial communities in environmental and biotechnological contexts. The Center sits within the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience — a dynamic hub for research and education that generates fundamental knowledge and tackles global challenges across biology, chemistry, biotechnology, bioengineering, environmental science, and chemical engineering. The position is based at the University's campus in Aalborg — a vibrant Danish city offering world-class architecture, a thriving cultural scene, and a youthful energy driven by its large student population. With stunning North Jutland nature on the doorstep and a cost of living well below Copenhagen's, Aalborg University combines a cutting-edge academic environment with an outstanding quality of life.
We are committed to making our department an exceptional place to work and study. Alongside flexible hours and a full calendar of social events — at both department and section level — we foster a culture built on openness, curiosity, transparency, and genuine inclusion. We respect and celebrate the diversity of individuals, communities, and cultures that make us who we are. We'd love to have you join us!
