Join Aalborg University's pioneering signal processing research as a postdoc or research assistant

dato

The Department of Electronic Systems at The Technical Faculty of IT and Design invites applications for a position as research assistant or postdoc in the field of Signal Processing for Detection & Estimation as per August 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for a period of 1 year, with the possibility of extension.

In electronic engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and societal impact. The Department of Electronic Systems employs more than 200 people, of which about 90 are PhD students, and about 40 % of all employees are internationals. In total, it has more than 600 students in its BSc and MSc programs, which are based on AAU's problem-based learning model. The department leverages its unique research infrastructure and lab facilities to conduct world-leading fundamental and applied research within communication, networks, control systems, AI, sound, cyber security, and robotics. The department plays an active role in transferring inventions and results into applications in close collaboration with industrial partners worldwide. You can read more about the department at www.es.aau.dk.

Your work tasks
You will join the Grand Solution project " ASMADI - AI based Spectrum Monitoring for Anomaly Detection and Identification" to develop signal processing algorithms that enable autonomous detection, classification, and filtering of RF signals in real-time on satellites and drones. The key responsibility of the position is to develop algorithms for measured signals (provided by hardware collaborators or from public datasets/simulations). The role involves e.g. signal detection in noisy & interfering environments; signal filtering; signal compression; processing of measured data from mmWave RF signals; radar returns; quantum sensing measurements; and estimating and characterizing system parameters from data.

For a Research Assistant: You will develop technical solutions aligned with the consortium's objectives and contribute to related research areas under supervision.

For a Postdoctoral Researcher: There is a stronger emphasis on initiating and advancing independent research that both supports the project and contributes meaningfully to the broader scientific field, including publishing results and potentially co-supervising students.

Your competencies
The successful candidate should have excellent grades; strong mathematical skills (statistics, information theory; estimation theory); strong simulation skills for algorithm development; and a problem-solving mindset for signal processing challenges.

It is desirable that you have strong knowledge in at least two of the following research directions:

  1. statistical signal processing, e.g., detection theory and estimation theory;
  2. signal compression & sparse representations, e.g.,  compressive sensing, wavelet transforms;
  3. adaptive filtering & interference rejection, e.g., Kalman filter, notch filter, spatial filtering; 4) time-frequency analysis & spetrual estimation, e.g. STFT, cyclostationary analysis, direction/angle estimation.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as a research assistant requires academic qualifications at master's degree level.

Appointment as postdoc requires academic qualifications at PhD level.

Who we are
The research group is recognized internationally as a strong research group in radio propagation and antenna measurements. The group also pioneered over-the-air antenna testing for single-antenna handsets, which later became an international standard, and has also strongly influenced later testing of multi-antenna devices in 4G and 5G radios. The group is well known for its strong relationship with industry and experimentally based research, which is enabled by world top-notch laboratory facilities.
