A position as Associate Professor in Architectural Engineering is open at the Department of the Built Environment, Aalborg University. The division of Architectural engineering is based on Aalborg University’s main campus in Aalborg in Aalborg. The position is available from 1st of September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description:

The building industry faces numerous challenges in making the built environment more sustainable. From national regulations to European sustainability goals, the industry continuously meets new requirements for the efficient use and reuse of resources in construction, promoting renovation, and improving occupant well-being.

The position is oriented towards research and teaching within the domains covered by the division of Architectural Engineering. This includes various aspects of sustainability related to the design, construction, and operation of buildings and building sites. Examples include promoting renovation of existing buildings, aiding the development of high-performance indoor environments and energy performance in our future buildings, and advancing the transition towards more sustainable construction sites.

We are seeking a candidate with built-environment expertise in the areas above, holding a relevant educational background in Civil engineering, Architecture, or Construction Management, with practical experience being advantageous.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience with participation in and leadership of national and international project work of various sizes. This includes collaborations with a broad range of actors, such as other universities, consultants, companies, municipalities, charitable foundations, and authorities.
  • Knowledge and experience within different building life-cycle stages such as Design, Documentation, Construction (including on-site administration), Operation and Reuse/refurbishment.
  • Proficiency with methods to collect and analyse qualitative data, such as interviews, surveys, observations, focus group meetings and workshops. Experience applying such methods to investigate human behaviour and identify barriers/potentials for improving current practice.
  • Expertise in quantitative data collection and analysis, including on-site measurement techniques, calculation and simulation tools, and methods for data treatment.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and modelling skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and preferably Danish.
  • Competence with a broad range of knowledge dissemination formats, in addition to scientific paper writing and conference presentations for academic audiences. Dissemination for non-academic audiences includes articles for professional journals, popular articles for non-professional stakeholders and the general public, and oral presentations of research results through conferences and webinars.

It is essential that the candidate has several years of experience in teaching and supervision at the bachelor's and master's levels, as the candidate is expected to teach within the Division of Architectural Engineering and contribute to the education offered by the Department of the Built Environment. The candidate should have broad knowledge and a strong teaching profile within the group's educational topics, and it is considered beneficial to have prior experience with problem-based learning.

Danish fluency is preferable, as several of the intended teaching responsibilities lie within education with Danish as the main language, such as the master’s programme in Byggeledelse og Bygningsinformatik, and the bachelor's programme in Byggeri og Anlæg.
