Join Aalborg University as a research assistant or postdoc in hardware measurement platforms for AI-driven spectrum monitoring

dato

The Department of Electronic Systems at The Technical Faculty of IT and Design invites applications for a position as research assistant or postdoc in the field of Hardware & Measurement Platforms as per August 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for a period of 1 year, with the possibility of extension.

In electronic engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and societal impact. The Department of Electronic Systems employs more than 200 people, of which about 90 are PhD students, and about 40 % of all employees are internationals. In total, it has more than 600 students in its BSc and MSc programs, which are based on AAU's problem-based learning model. The department leverages its unique research infrastructure and lab facilities to conduct world-leading fundamental and applied research within communication, networks, control systems, AI, sound, cyber security, and robotics. The department plays an active role in transferring inventions and results into applications in close collaboration with industrial partners worldwide. You can read more about the department at www.es.aau.dk.

Your work tasks
You will join the Grand Solution project "ASMADI - AI based Spectrum Monitoring for Anomaly Detection and Identification" to explore AI-driven solutions for onboard spectrum monitoring, capable of autonomously detecting, classifying, and filtering RF signals in real-time on satellites and drones. The key responsibility of the position is to develop custom measurement platforms from discrete hardware components. The role involves:

  • Hardware integration – assembling measurement systems from individual components (e.g., signal generators, spectrum analyzers, antennas, mixers, SDRs, FPGAs, ADCs/DACs)
  • Test system validation – characterizing the platform's own performance (noise figure, dynamic range, bandwidth, linearity, stability, measurement uncertainty)
  • Practical measurements for application examples: mmWave RF signal characterization, Radar sensing, Quantum sensing.

For a Research Assistant:
You will develop technical solutions aligned with the consortium's objectives and contribute to related research areas under supervision.

For a Postdoctoral Researcher:
There is a stronger emphasis on initiating and advancing independent research that both supports the project and contributes meaningfully to the broader scientific field, including publishing results and potentially co-supervising students.

Your competencies
The successful candidate should have excellent grades, a hands-on and problem-solving mindset, experience working with RF/test & measurement equipment. It is desirable that you have strong knowledge in at least two of the following research directions:

  1. RF hardware integration, e.g., mixers, amplifiers, SDR, FPGAs;
  2. measurement system characterization, e.g., validating platform performance such as dynamic range, linearity, phase noise and measurement uncertainty;
  3. automated test & data acquisition, e.g., using Python/MATLAB/LabVIEW for instrument control and automated measurement routines; 4) calibration & uncertainty analysis, e.g., system error calibration for mmWave, radar or quantum sensing meaurements.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as a research assistant requires academic qualifications at master's degree level.

Appointment as postdoc requires academic qualifications at PhD level.

Who we are
The research group is recognized internationally as a strong research group in radio propagation and antenna measurements. The group also pioneered over-the-air antenna testing for single-antenna handsets, which later became an international standard, and has also strongly influenced later testing of multi-antenna devices in 4G and 5G radios. The group is well known for its strong relationship with industry and experimentally based research, which is enabled by world top-notch laboratory facilities.
