Associate professor role in battery energy storage at AAU Energy focusing on research, teaching, and innovation

At the AAU Energy, a position as Associate Professor in Battery Energy Storage for Mechatronics is open for appointment from September 1st. 2026 or soon hereafter. The duration of the position is 4 years.

Your work tasks
As Associate Professor, you will strengthen our research, education, and innovation around advanced topics in battery technology and applications of battery energy storage in mechatronic systems and applications.

Topics of interest include battery testing and diagnostics, intelligent charging and usage strategies based on AI, and the development of digital tools for battery analysis and management. The candidate is expected to independently initiate new research activities and contribute to expanding the research portfolio towards battery technologies and future energy storage paradigms. The position should encourage interdisciplinary engineering approaches, including AI, modeling, sensing technologies, and data-driven methods, aimed at improving battery safety, reliability, and lifetime.

Attracting research funding and initiating new collaborations are core tasks related to the position. This includes strengthening internal collaborations and partnerships, engaging with local industry to explore new business development opportunities, and building international research collaborations within frameworks such as Horizon Europe’s Research and Innovation Actions.

As for the teaching, the position is expected to contribute to a new teaching curriculum at Master’s level and PhD level with advanced multidisciplinary topics in energy storage technologies. You will be expected to contribute to course development, execution and evaluation besides supervision. Taking part in relevant departmental committees and boards are also an integral part of the position.

The position is offered in relation to the research group "Batteries" and the Associate Professor will be positioned in the Mechatronic Section.

Your competencies   
We seek a candidate with a strong and well-documented research record, demonstrating expertise in the interdisciplinary domains of battery technology, power electronics, and mechatronic systems.
In particular, the successful applicants are expected to demonstrate several of the following qualifications:

  • Broad intellectual capacity in battery energy storage science including its electrochemical aspects toward system-level integration aspects
  • Experience with scientific tools and methods for battery testing, monitoring, diagnostics and modelling
  • Practical experience with experimental work and laboratory instrumentations from battery cells to modules and packs (test and design-of-experiment using advanced battery cycling machines, chambers, battery emulators, BMS-in-the-Loop, etc.)
  • Ability to work and lead multidisciplinary research teams involving applied AI, digital twins, and advanced spectroscopy & signal processing for complex battery topics in charging, degradation analysis, etc.
  • Documented proof of ability for project design and development
  • Proven track record on attracting external research funding in related to battery energy storage technologies
  • Demonstrated experience in project execution and leadership at national and European levels

In addition to the research profile and technical expertise listed above, experience with teaching and supervision is expected. Familiarity Problem Based Learning concepts are welcomed.

The candidate should be prepared to teach in Danish in the future, as bachelor-level courses are primarily offered in Danish. Skills in Danish will therefore be positively evaluated. If Danish proficiency is not already present, the candidate will be expected to demonstrate an active effort to learn Danish as a second or third language.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as an associate professor requires research and teaching qualifications at the level that can be achieved through the satisfactory completion of a period of employment as an assistant professor but may also be obtained in other ways.  

It is a precondition that applicants have documented research at an international standard. In addition, applicants are assumed to have received supervision and pedagogical skills development and to have obtained a positive written assessment of their teaching qualifications.

Salary and terms of employment
