At the Department of Culture and Communication, Aalborg University, a permanent position as associate professor is available as of August 1st, 2026. It is a full-time position that includes both research and teaching activities.
For appointment as an associate professor, the ideal candidate is expected to:
• Deliver high quality teaching, project supervision and associated examination as required across the range of modules offered on the LISE BA and CCG MA programs, e.g. experience with courses on European politics, policy analytical approaches, European public spheres
• Be able to assist with coordination and outreach activities of the programs
• Conduct research and publish research outputs of an internationally recognized quality in the areas of European Studies
• Engage with external stakeholders to enhance the cultural, social, environmental and/or economic impacts of their research and/or teaching
• Contribute in a positive and constructive manner to the day-to-day activities and working environment of the Department of Culture and Communication and the Democracy, Migration and Society (DEMOS) Research Group.
In relation to research, the position includes research at an international level within European Studies. We particularly welcome candidates whose research addresses issues related to transnational forms of organising and discursive/communicative aspects of Europeanisation.
Applicants are expected to have research experience within the following areas:
• Experience, skills or achievements which demonstrate the ability or potential to produce high quality research outputs and publish in international journals
• A personal research and publication plan that harmonizes with the Department of Culture and Communication’s strategy and shows the applicant's plans for developing new research products and projects within the fields of European Studies in the Research group DEMOS
• Experiences with participating in collaborative research projects
• Demonstrates the ambition and potential to attract external funding, such as applying to calls from the Danish Research council, and produce high quality research outputs
• Experience, skills or achievements which demonstrate participation in, and the ability to further develop, external and/or international networks and collaborations
• Experience, skills or achievements which demonstrate the ability or potential to engage in activities with stakeholders outside academia to enhance the impact of research
The successful applicant will teach primarily on the Language and International Studies (LISE) BA program and the Culture, Communication and Globalisation (CCG) MA program at the Aalborg Campus.
In relation to teaching, the applicant is expected to document:
• Experience, skills or achievements which demonstrate the ability to deliver high quality teaching on the LISE BA and CCG MA programs, using a range of pedagogical approaches including problem-based learning, project supervision, group work, interactive seminars and lectures
• Their ability to teach and assess written assignments and oral presentations in English. All teaching and supervision on the programs are conducted in English.
• At Aalborg University our learning approach is problem-based learning (PBL). Documented experience with this learning approach is therefore preferred but is not a prerequisite.
• The successful applicant will be expected to encourage active learning and enhance the employability of our students, as well as contributing to the development of the BA and MA programs.
The position is primarily affiliated with the research group Democracy, Migration and Society (DEMOS) that has a range of research interests within the following main areas.

Furthermore, DEMOS research covers various geographical areas, moves within the field of international studies and pays attention not only to the local and national but also to transnational and global dynamics.
In terms of personal qualities, the applicant is expected to have solid cooperative abilities as well as the ability to create and maintain productive relationships with researchers of various research and cultural backgrounds. A national as well as an international network is preferred.
Daily attendance at the department is required. In addition, applicants should be prepared to actively participate in all aspects of the day-to-day activities of the department and study programs. Qualification requirements
Appointment as an associate professor requires research and teaching qualifications at the level that can be achieved through the satisfactory completion of a period of employment as an assistant professor but may also be obtained in other ways.
It is a precondition that applicants have documented research at an international standard. In addition, applicants are assumed to have received supervision and pedagogical skills development and to have obtained a positive written assessment of their teaching qualifications.

Salary and terms of employment
