At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Materials and Production a position as Assistant Professor in Biomechanics is open for appointment from May 1st, 2026 or soon thereafter. The position is available for a period of three years.
Your work tasks
Research areas will be within biomechanics in general and with a particular focus on musculoskeletal diseases and the design and evaluation of orthopedic devices. The role will involve leveraging computational models and experimental techniques to address both fundamental and clinical research questions. Candidates should have experience in designing and conducting experimental testing whether in vitro or in vivo. A strong background in biomechanical engineering is essential.
The teaching responsibilities will primarily focus on the biomechanical engineering master education as well as fundamental courses at both bachelor and master level of the mechanical engineering education, including topics such as biomaterials, design of medical devices, vibration mechanics and finite element analysis. Additionally, teaching may extend to other study programs offered at the University.
Your competencies
We are looking for applicants with independent research-related qualifications at a high international level and a PhD degree in biomechanical or mechanical engineering or a related field, and you show potential to become one of the best in the academic field of the position. You are a clear communicator, and you can, under guidance, organize and conduct supervision and teaching at bachelor’s and master’s degree level. Completed pedagogical courses in supervision or similar will be a plus, but not a requirement. You have experience with external research collaborations. We also draw attention to stays at one or more internationally recognized research institutions.
As a person, you have good interpersonal skills, are inclusive and team-oriented and able to contribute to a good working environment.
We expect you to be able to write and speak English at an academic level.
Qualification requirements
Appointment as assistant professor requires academic qualifications at PhD level. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.
Who we are
The Biomechanics Research Group works with a wide variety of topics, including orthopedics, osteoarthritis, sports science, design of medical devices, ergonomic product design, functional anatomy and basic science using experimental tools such as motion capture, EMG, sonography, and material testing, and simulation tools such as musculoskeletal modeling, multibody dynamics, finite element analysis and numerical methods in general.
The Department of Materials and Production (MP) is a wide-ranging research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Department's mission is to meet the future's demands for new materials and production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding to materials' applications in mechanical construction, industrial production, and management. The department has several strong, international, and innovative research groups that comprise everything from basic science to strategic and applied research. The activities encompass research and education within materials, mechanics, physics, production, and industrial management and innovation.
Several innovative and unconventional collaborations have been and are being developed through interdisciplinary cooperation, benefiting the industry and additional collaborators. The Department’s activities are supported by world-class laboratories, and they are an important part of the research at the department. Specifically in relation to this position we have facilities for synthesis and characterization of materials covering the range from the atomic scale in the cleanroom and materials labs to fabrication of components and devices.
