Postdoc opportunity in automation and control at Aalborg University

dato

The Department of Electronic Systems at The Technical Faculty of IT and Design invites applications for a postdoc in the field of Automation and Control as per January 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for a period of 2 years.

In electronic engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and societal impact. The Department of Electronic Systems employs more than 200 people, of which about 90 are PhD students, and about 40 % of all employees are internationals. In total, it has more than 600 students in its BSc and MSc programs, which are based on AAU's problem-based learning model. The department leverages its unique research infrastructure and lab facilities to conduct world-leading fundamental and applied research within communication, networks, control systems, AI, sound, cyber security, and robotics. The department plays an active role in transferring inventions and results into applications in close collaboration with industrial partners worldwide. You can read more about the department at www.es.aau.dk.

Your work tasks
You will contribute to both teaching and research in the Automation & Control section.

On the research side, you will investigate and develop data-driven methods for optimal and nonlinear control with a particular focus on dual control and on approaches to measurement scheduling and active sensing. The work includes theoretical analysis, algorithm design, and validation on realistic case studies, as well as dissemination of results through publications, open-source code, and collaboration with internal and external partners.

On the teaching side, you will help deliver courses at BSc, MSc and PhD level by lecturing, and preparing and running exercise sessions. Additionally, you will be involved in supervising semester projects. You will also take part in course coordination and day-to-day support of the study activities in collaboration with the course responsible.

Your competencies
The ideal candidate has a strong background in control engineering, with documented expertise in optimal control, adaptive control and online optimization, stochastic systems, Bayesian inference, and state estimation and filtering, preferably applied to real-world problems. Experience with dual control and/or active sensing and measurement scheduling will be considered an advantage. A track record of publications in leading control venues such as the IEEE Conference on Decision and Control and IEEE Control Systems Letters, and in top machine learning conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML or AAAI, is expected. Proficiency in MATLAB and Julia is required, along with the ability to produce reliable, well-structured code. Evidence of teaching experience across BSc, MSc and PhD levels is important.

Excellent communication skills, curiosity, and a collaborative mindset are important, as is the ability to explain complex ideas clearly to students and peers. Independence in driving research forward combined with a strong commitment to teamwork in an international environment will be valued. Motivation to contribute to high-quality teaching and impactful research is key to success in this role. Moreover, due to teaching obligations on BSc level the candidate is expected to be able to communicate in Danish.

Who we are
In the Automation & Control section, we focus on developing mathematical and computational methods for modeling, estimation, monitoring, and control of dynamic systems, thereby providing core paradigms for designing control solutions across diverse engineering applications. Our research—conducted by faculty, researchers, and students with support from government and industry—spans both fundamental and applied domains, emphasizing the translation of scientific advances into practical technologies. The section comprises four research groups: Advanced Robotics & AI, Green Lab, Learning and Decisions Lab, and Nonlinear and Optimal Control Lab.
