Position open for assistant or associate professor in structural engineering at Aalborg University

dato

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of the Built Environment (BUILD) at Aalborg University’s campus in Aalborg, a position as Assistant or Associate Professor in Structural Engineering is open for appointment from the 1st of July 2026 or soon thereafter.

The position is available as a 4-year temporary position (Assistant Professor) or as a permanent position (Associate Professor), depending on qualifications, with a full-time workload (37 hours per week). The position offers the opportunity to work within a strong academic environment focused on classical structural engineering, contributing to both research and education in a field of central importance for the built environment.

Your work tasks

The position targets classical structural engineering, with a strong emphasis on mechanics-based modelling and the Finite Element Method (FEM). The research focus is on a rigorous, physics-based description of structural behavior, spanning from fundamental continuum mechanics to applied structural analysis and design.

The position includes a substantial teaching component, with a central role in delivering and developing courses in structural mechanics and related fundamental subjects, ensuring a strong theoretical foundation in engineering education. Teaching responsibilities include courses in structural mechanics and dynamics, material modelling, and finite element methods at both bachelor and master level. As teaching at the bachelor level is conducted in Danish, proficiency in Danish is required at the time of employment.

Furthermore, the candidate is expected to strengthen the department’s expertise in analytical and computational structural mechanics, contributing to both research excellence and high-quality teaching. The candidate is expected to develop independent research activities, attract external funding, and contribute to interdisciplinary collaborations where relevant.

Your Competencies

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong expertise in classical mechanics, dynamics, structural analysis, and FEM, including formulation, implementation, and critical assessment of numerical models. Experience with common structural materials, including concrete, is considered relevant. The candidate is expected to have a solid understanding of structural behaviour, and the ability to translate this into both research and teaching activities.

It is considered an advantage if the candidate possesses a strong understanding of the construction sector in Denmark, including practical aspects and interaction with industry.

Additional qualifications that will be positively evaluated include expertise in Computational Structural Mechanics and nonlinear finite element analysis, experience in fracture and crack mechanics, and an interest in or application of Artificial Intelligence in structural engineering.

Qualification requirements

Assistant professor
Appointment as assistant professor requires academic qualifications at PhD level. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.

Associate professor
Appointment as an associate professor requires research and teaching qualifications at the level that can be achieved through the satisfactory completion of a period of employment as an assistant professor but may also be obtained in other ways.

It is a precondition that applicants have documented research at an international standard. In addition, applicants are assumed to have received supervision and pedagogical skills development and to have obtained a positive written assessment of their teaching qualifications.

Who we are

The position is anchored in the Section for Structures, Geotechnics and Risk (SGR), led by Associate Professor Dario Parigi, within the Department of the Built Environment (BUILD) at Aalborg University. The section brings together three research groups: the Research Group for Geotechnical Engineering and Offshore Foundations, the Research Group for Risk, Resilience, Safety and Sustainability of Systems, and the Research Group for Sustainable Structures, Materials and Construction.

SGR contributes to BUILD’s overall mission by addressing complementary aspects of sustainability in civil engineering, spanning geotechnical engineering, structural design, material performance, and risk, reliability, and safety of civil engineering structures and infrastructure.

The section is characterized by a strong commitment to scientific excellence, close interaction between colleagues, and a collaborative research culture across disciplines. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to and strengthen this collaborative spirit, engaging constructively with colleagues across the section and its research groups.

BUILD focuses on technical and scientific disciplines within the built environment, including Structural Engineering, Structural Materials, Geotechnical Engineering, Energy Systems, and Infrastructure. Research is conducted in both national and international collaborations, combining theoretical developments, numerical modelling, and experimental validation. As part of BUILD, you will join an international research environment with a strong focus on innovation, knowledge sharing, and interdisciplinary collaboration across engineering disciplines.
