Join Aalborg University's team as a research assistant or postdoc on drone-based EM measurements

dato

The Department of Electronic Systems at The Technical Faculty of IT and Design invites applications for a position as research assistant or postdoc in the field of Advanced Drone-Based EM Measurements and Data Processing as per October 1, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for a period of 1 year, with the possibility of extension.

In electronic engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and societal impact. The Department of Electronic Systems employs more than 200 people, of which about 90 are PhD students, and about 40 % of all employees are internationals. In total, it has more than 600 students in its BSc and MSc programs, which are based on AAU's problem-based learning model. The department leverages its unique research infrastructure and lab facilities to conduct world-leading fundamental and applied research within communication, networks, control systems, AI, sound, cyber security, and robotics. The department plays an active role in transferring inventions and results into applications in close collaboration with industrial partners worldwide. You can read more about the department at www.es.aau.dk.

Your work tasks
You will join the Grand Solution project "DRONES: Drone-Obtained Electromagnetic Signatures" to explore innovative approaches such as drone-based radio testing for large objects and EM signiture characterization in complex in-situ environments. The key responsibility of the position is to develop post-processing methods to extra essential features from the collected measurement data despite drone positional inaccuracy, irregular sampling grids, variations in measurement conditions, and other measurement uncertainties.

The responsibilities of a research assistant involve developing technical solutions aligned with the consortium's objectives and contributing to related research areas. For a postdoctoral researcher, there is a stronger emphasis on initiating and advancing independent research that both supports the project and contributes meaningfully to the broader scientific field.

Your competencies
The successful candidates should have excellent grades, strong mathematical and simulation skills and problem-solving mind-sets. It is desirable that the candidates have strong knowledge in at least one of the following research directions:

1) array signal processing
2) Radio channel sounding, estimation, and modelling
3) Integration design of SDR-based RF transceiver,
4) Antenna measurement in near-field and far-field condition and using complex and power-only measurement.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as a research assistant requires academic qualifications at master's degree level.

Appointment as postdoc requires academic qualifications at PhD level.

Who we are
The research group is recognized internationally as a strong research group in radio propagation and antenna measurements. The group also pioneered over-the-air antenna testing for single-antenna handsets, which later became an international standard, and has also strongly influenced later testing of multi-antenna devices in 4G and 5G radios. The group is well known for its strong relationship with industry and experimentally based research, which is enabled by world top-notch laboratory facilities.
