PhD position in probabilistic machine Learning
Are you passionate about probabilistic machine learning and its potential to address real-world scientific challenges? At Aalborg University, Denmark, we invite you to join a collaborative project at the intersection of advanced probabilistic machine learning and microbial bioscience. This position offers a unique opportunity for developing novel probabilistic ML methods with a view towards bioinformatics and modeling of the complex microbial communities that shape our word.
We are seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher to develop scalable probabilistic machine learning models and algorithms for representation learning, uncertainty quantification, and model interpretability over large, heterogeneous datasets such as sequenced microbial DNA fragments coupled with auxiliary environmental data.
Starting date: August 15th, 2025, or soon thereafter.
Your work tasks
This position is part of the VILLUM Synergy project “Illuminating microbial dark matter through data science”, an exciting cross-disciplinary probabilistic machine learning project with applications in bioscience. As part of the project, you will be involved in
• Conducting original research in probabilistic machine learning, within the topics mentioned above, focusing on generative and Bayesian models relying on methods ranging from mathematics, algorithmic design, to implementation, and experimentation.
• Analyzing large-scale environmental datasets to recover and explore microbial genomes.
• Collaborating with researchers in computer science and biosciences to produce original and high-impact research.
• Publishing your findings in top-tier international conferences and journals within machine learning and computer science.
Your competencies
• M.sc in computer science, artificial intelligence, statistics, data science, or a closely related field.
• At least basic understanding in (probabilistic) machine learning.
• Solid programming skills and a collaborative mindset.
• Strong communication skills in English (written and oral).
Experience in interdisciplinary research is a plus!
Qualification requirements
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
